CDW, the acronym for “Collision Damage Waiver”, is an insurance (or rather, a “liability waiver”) offered in the context of car rental. In essence, it reduces the customer’s financial liability in case of damage to the rental vehicle, but usually does not completely eliminate the liability, leaving a deductible to be paid.
Detailed meaning:
Waiver of liability for damages:
CDW limits the customer’s liability for damage to the rental car caused by collisions. In case of damage, the customer will not have to pay the full cost of the repair, but only a deductible, which is the maximum amount that the customer is responsible for paying.
Does not cover everything:
It is important to note that the CDW does not cover all damages. Damage to the tyres, rims, windscreen, roof, underbody, mirrors, car interiors and sometimes also towing costs or damage caused by driving in unsuitable conditions are usually excluded.
Deductible:
The deductible is the maximum amount that the customer has to pay for damages. This amount may vary depending on the rental company, type of vehicle and specific coverage chosen.
Specifically covers accidents suffered by the driver, be they medical expenses, disability or death.
When renting a car, RCA insurance is mandatory, but PAI is often an additional option that offers more comprehensive protection for the driver.
If you hire a car and have an accident that causes injury to the driver, RCA insurance will cover damage caused to third parties but not damage suffered by the driver himself. In this case, if the driver has subscribed to the PAI, it will cover medical expenses, ambulance transport and other compensation provided for by the policy.
In summary, the PAI is an important policy to protect the driver in case of accident, offering additional coverage compared to the RCA alone.
